The musculoskeletal system is essential to human health, providing the foundation for movement and maintaining body structure

Health conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons are common worldwide. In Ireland, musculoskeletal disorders impact 33% of the population (European Health Information Gateway, 2019 report).

The prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions increases with age, as the ageing process complicates the interactions between muscle and bone. But younger people are also affected, often during their peak income-earning years. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders remain the most common work-related health problem in the European Union, and workers in all sectors and occupations can be affected.

Many specific nutritional interventions have been found helpful. The most effective holistic approach is to identify the underlying drivers for the individual and address these rather than following a general protocol for the condition.

Learning outcomes:

  • Revising the anatomy + physiology of the musculoskeletal system
  • Identifying underlying drivers in musculoskeletal issues
  • Nutrition for specific musculoskeletal health conditions: diet and supplements
