Mindfulness course for pain and illness UK

Event Details

The Breathworks Mindfulness for Health (MfH) course is designed for adults with pain, fatigue or other physical health conditions.

This is a live 8 weeks, 2 hours a week course, with each session beginning and ending with a mindfulness meditation to ensure that your evening is a restful as well as productive one. The teaching elements reveal a series of simple practices that you can incorporate into your daily life to relieve chronic pain and the suffering and stress of illness.

It is based on a unique meditation programme developed by Vidyamala Burch to help her cope with the severe pain of spinal injury. Taught at Breathworks in the UK – and its affiliates around the world – this programme is backed up by ongoing research, and has already changed the lives of thousands of people.

Breathworks Mindfulness for Health 8 weeks courses have been shown to:

↓Pain intensity and severity ↓Pain interference ↓Pain unpleasantness ↑Pain acceptance ↓Pain catastrophising ↑Pain self-efficacy, ie confidence in performing activities while in pain

↓Fatigue Severity ↓Fatigue Interference ↓Sleep Difficulties

WHAT I WILL LEARN?

  • Skills to ease the suffering associated with pain, fatigue and ill health
  • How to practice meditation
  • How to include mindfulness and self-compassion in your daily life
  • Supportive mindful movement practices
  • Ways to improve concentration and focus
  • The art of taking joy in simple pleasures
  • Tips from modern Chronic Pain management techniques, including pacing and learning how to break the ‘boom and bust’ cycle

Each week’s topic will be supported by an email containing resources such as videos and meditation recordings that you can explore in your own time, as well as templates for a reflective pacing diary that you can use to track your experiences and progress during the weeks where this becomes our focus.

In addition, it is suggested that you buy the book that accompanies the course, which is entitled ‘Mindfulness for Health’ written by Vidyamala Burch and Danny Penman. It costs £12.50 and is widely available from all major booksellers. The book was winner of Best Book (Popular Medicine) at the British Medical Association’s Book Awards 2014.

WHO IS THE COURSE DESIGNED FOR?

The course welcomes anyone who would like to explore how mindfulness can help to manage pain, illness, fatigue, or any other health condition.

No previous experience of mindfulness or meditation is required as the course is suitable for complete beginners, as well as more experienced mindfulness practitioners.

The group will be limited to a maximum of 15 people to ensure that there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, but please be aware that this is not a therapeutic space and no medical advice will be offered: the focus will be purely on how mindfulness can be used to support your physical and related mental wellbeing.

WHAT TIME COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED?

The course consists of 8 Zoom sessions of 2 hours (including a 10 -15 minutes break). Each session will include guided meditations, in-depth teaching on the practices and techniques, discussion, opportunities for questions, and help with your home practice.

You are welcome to turn your camera off and move around, lie down, sit or stand at any point: information about how to create a comfortable space to participate in each session will be emailed to you before the course begins.

In order to gain greatest benefit from the course, it is best if you can enjoy approximately 20 minutes of meditation practice per day. This could be split into 2 x 10 minutes and is not a test! You will be given lots of support in order to make this an enjoyable exploration of all that mindfulness meditation has to offer.

COURSE DATES

Each Zoom call will be 7.30 – 9.30pm UK time (BST) on Wednesdays 19th & 26th May, 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd June, 7th & 14th July 2021.

(There is also a morning version of this course running 10am – 12 midday BST from Tuesday 18th May if you prefer an earlier time. Please click here for details)

ANY QUESTIONS?

I always arrange a short Zoom call with every course participant before the course begins. This gives us an opportunity to get to know each other, so that you can ask any questions that you may have, and I can understand what you would like to gain from the course. This ensures that I can tailor the content in order to support you in the best way possible. Please do email me if you would like to arrange this call before you decide whether or not to book the course ~ there is no obligation at all!
